2007 Patriots Not Equal to ‘72 Dolphins. Yet.

After the Patriot’s 38-35 victory over the New York Giants last night, I wake up to see article after article lauding the Patriot’s “perfect” season and equating them with Don Shula’s 1972 Dolphin team. This is ludicrous.
Now, let me say a couple of things up front: 1) A 16-0 season in the NFL is an unheard-of achievement, and one of which the Patriots should be justifiably proud; 2) In terms of talent, there’s no comparison in my mind; the 2007 Pats would wipe the field with the ‘72 Dolphins.
But, for the moment at least, the world needs to refrain from saying the Pats have achieved perfection… they haven’t. They have yet to face the crucible of the playoffs, an ordeal which brings pressure and opposition unlike anything faced in the regular season. Even the Patriot’s regular-season matchup with the Colts doesn’t compare, since either team could have lost that game without destroying their championship prospects (and, in fact, the Colts did. Some reports even have Tony Dungy holding Marvin Harrison out when he could have played just to send a message to his team that the contest was just another game, something that would never happen in the playoffs in Harrison could stagger onto the field.)
I won’t bet against the Patriots, though I’d personally love to see Brett Favre win one more and go out on top, just for sentimental reasons. But I will hold off from giving them the ultimate compliment until they have earned it, which they can’t do before February 3, 2008. Should they lose in the interim, they will have achieved nothing but a very remarkable, but ultimately disappointing season.
