American Idol Top 8 Results Show – Season 7, April 10 2008

Hi everyone and thanks for reading tonight. Last night was the Idol Gives Back spectacular, so tonight we have a rare Thursday results show. I was unable to blog the show as usual, so I’m bringing in a special guest blogger… regular readers will notice quite a style difference. Probably a content difference, too, as our musical tastes don’t always align… in fact, she once wanted to attend a James Taylor show rather than an REM concert. There’s something basically wrong with that.

Anyway, without further ado, here’s her take on tonight’s results show!

—————————————————————————————————–

8:01 PM: Ryan starts off by explaining that it is a different night because of Idol Gives Back, but hasn’t mentioned the total yet.

Now they are showing a recap of last night’s show – starting with that awful song the Idols did in the opener. Oh man, can I mute it during the Mariah Carey part? They show Robin Williams’ minus the pornographic part. Speaking of pornographic, Is anyone else surprised that Jimmy Kimmel can talk about Simon’s nipples on family TV? Now Fergie, who won me over. Millie Cirrus who I wasn’t impressed with. Next Brittany, followed by the awful rendition by the Desperate Housewife of Before He Cheats and Annie Lennox’s performance. I think I liked Annie but it may just be her voice I like.

Ryan tells us that they have raised 60 million so far. Followed quickly by a plug for iTunes.

Okay, the Idols singing Shout to the Lord again. Um, don’t you think that we already heard this last night. It was fine, nice but really, nothing new? Nothing different. *Sigh* Plus this song has a weird way of getting into my head, reminds me of my youth years in church when chorus singing was all the rage.

I guess talking about nipples and God in the same show is okay?

Okay, I’ll try to stop thinking about both that song and Simon’s nipples. Now a montage of celebrities dancing and lip-synching to I’m a Believer. Cute. Show Filler. They really need to make the results show a half and hour. Or maybe like the lottery drawing snippets. 3-4 minutes should tell us all I need to know. Another appearance by Kobe Bryant with his weird white band aid.

8:15 About to start telling about the bottom 3. Brooke White says her sister is getting married and she won’t be there. Ryan confirms that she is safe by letting her read the card.. Now David Cook. He looks worried. David is safe and seems very relieved. Now David Arculeta. The girls are screaming. I’m betting he’s not safe. Let’s see. Nope, he is also safe. So now there are 5 left and 3 chairs.
Next on the show they tell us a bit more about on Forest Whittaker’s efforts, showing a little boy who lost his mother to TB and his father is blind from stepping on a land mine. The boy is six and is trying to earn food for his family. They sleep in an abandoned building.

Jordan Sparks and Chris Brown are up next, singing No Air. She looks good with bright red streaks in her hair and a tight black dress. I don’t know what to say about this song. One of those repetitive ditties that sounds like every other song to me. Just not crazy about it. Jordan is presented with plaques commemorating downloads of No Air and Tattoo and reaching the half million mark on her album. They seem to be trying to convince people that the show it still valid.
Time for the Ford Commercial… tonight’s song is I Just Want to Celebrate and the clip features some spilled paint that looks like the earth when they pan out. Cute.
8:40 Now more results. Jason Castro. He did the Kermit the Froggy Over the Rainbow. He too is safe. Now it is 4 left and 3 chairs. Kristy Lee Cook. She looks nervous this time for a change. She is safe this week.

So your bottom three are Carly, Syesha and Michael. I think only Syesha is the right choice here.

Jim Carrey takes a moment to plug idol gives back. Now Bono makes another appearance while the bottom three wait. He talks about the candidates and the new America, says that America needs to see the charitable America. Now Hillary Clinton is on and plugging Idol Gives Back, saying she’s worked with many of the groups that will benefit from the donations. Shameless self-promotion from Hillary. Now McCain is on, saying is like an election. Makes a joke about Michigan and Florida not having votes that count. Funny. Obama comes on last and tells us he believes deeply in what Idol Gives Back is about. Says his daughters are fans (cheers from the crowd when he appears).

Ryan talks to judges, ask Simon if America is listening to him. He says yes, he and America have a connection. Now another commercial break. A weird Al Sharpton (Weird Al… Sharpton) and Pat Robertson commercial where they are sitting on a couch on the beach and saying they agree on one thing, taking care of the planet.
Now the results. Syesha and Carly are safe. Michael Johns is out. The audience is booing. Paula is shocked. Everyone seems to be upset. My thoughts are that he and David Cook drew the same kind of audience and so one of those had to go. I hate that. I really like him. He is one of the more talented ones. I’m guessing he’ll find a niche
somewhere. This wasn’t the right time for him to leave.

Simon says he’s going to miss Michael.

——————————————————————————

There you have my guest blogger’s take. How did I do? I got two out of the bottom three, correctly predicting Carly and Syesha would make an appearance. My third pick was Kristy Lee Cook, who I had also picked to leave. Michael Johns departure caught me completely by surprise, but in retrospect it shouldn’t have. He’s been doing well the last few weeks, but I don’t think we ever felt him developing a fan base like the one that’s keeping David Archuleta around. Michael gave very enjoyable performances, but didn’t grab anyone who would stay around for two hours dialing for him.

I still think Kristy and David A. aren’t long for the show. We’ll see next week!
